Most growing businesses reach the same point: the owner can no longer keep the books, and the numbers are starting to matter to banks, investors or tax authorities. The instinct is to hire someone full-time. Often the better first step is a fractional finance professional.
What “fractional” means
A fractional accountant or finance controller works for you part-time, but with real ownership: they close your month, design your controls and report to you, just as an in-house finance manager would. You buy senior experience by the day rather than by the year.
Side by side
| Full-time hire | Fractional controller | |
|---|---|---|
| Experience level for the budget | Usually junior to mid-level | Senior |
| Fixed cost | Salary, benefits, equipment, leave cover | Agreed monthly fee |
| Systems and controls | Depends on the hire | Brought in from day one |
| Daily availability | Yes | Agreed days and response times |
| Scales with you | Next step is another hire | Increase days as volume grows |
When fractional is the better choice
- You have under roughly 300 to 500 transactions a month.
- You need someone to set up the finance function: chart of accounts, software, approval workflows.
- You are preparing for a bank loan, investor or audit and need reliable numbers quickly.
- You operate in more than one entity or country and need consolidation.
When to hire full-time
- Daily volume is high: many invoices, cash sales, inventory movements.
- You need someone physically on site for cash, stock or documents.
- Your systems and controls are already designed and need operating, not building.
The best of both
Many of my clients use both: a junior accountant on site for daily entries, and me as the controller who designs the process, reviews the work and closes the month. The junior learns faster, and the owner gets senior oversight for a fraction of a CFO’s cost.
