UAE Corporate Tax has moved from headline news to routine compliance. Most SMEs have now filed at least one return, and many discovered that the hard part was not the tax, it was the bookkeeping behind it.
The rules in brief
- Rate: 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000; 9% above that.
- Small Business Relief: resident businesses with revenue of AED 3 million or less can elect to be treated as having no taxable income. The relief has been extended to cover tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029.
- Registration: required even if you expect to claim relief, because relief is elected in the return.
- Filing: the return and any payment are due within nine months of the end of your financial year.
- Record keeping: records must be kept for seven years after the end of the tax period.
What your books need to show
1. Revenue you can defend
Small Business Relief depends on a single number: revenue. If invoices are missing, credit notes are unrecorded or cash sales sit outside the system, you cannot prove you are under AED 3 million. Revenue in the books should reconcile to bank receipts and to your VAT returns.
2. A clean split between owner and business
Personal spending through the company account, or business costs paid personally, distort profit and invite questions. Record owner drawings and capital introduced properly.
3. Related-party transactions
Payments to owners, family members or connected companies must be at arm’s length and documented. This is one of the most common gaps in owner-managed businesses.
4. Accrual-based accounts
Corporate Tax starts from accounting profit. Expenses should be recorded in the period they relate to, with supplier bills and accruals at year end, not simply when cash leaves the bank.
5. VAT and Corporate Tax that agree
VAT is charged at 5%, with mandatory registration once taxable supplies pass AED 375,000. If your VAT returns show one turnover and your Corporate Tax return shows another, expect questions. Reconcile the two every quarter.
Mistakes that cost relief
- Registering late, or not at all, because “we are below the threshold”.
- Forgetting to elect Small Business Relief in the return.
- Revenue figures that cannot be traced back to invoices.
- Leaving the bookkeeping until the month before the deadline.
How I help UAE businesses
I keep monthly books in Xero or QuickBooks, reconcile VAT to the ledger every quarter, and prepare year-end accounts and a Corporate Tax working file. Where a formal filing or representation before the FTA needs a registered tax agent, I prepare the file and work alongside your agent, so their review is quick and your costs stay down.
Tell me about your business and your financial year-end, and I will outline what a clean set of books would take.
Quick answers
Do I need to register for UAE Corporate Tax if my revenue is below AED 3 million?
Yes. Small Business Relief must be elected in the Corporate Tax return, so the business still needs to be registered and still needs to file.
What is the UAE Corporate Tax rate?
0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% on taxable income above that, for most mainland businesses.
